WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS)?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic and potentially disabling autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS), which includes the brain and spinal cord. In Multiple Sclerosis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers, called myelin, leading to inflammation and damage.

The damage to myelin disrupts the normal flow of electrical impulses along the nerves. This can result in a wide range of symptoms, including fatigue, difficulty walking, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, problems with coordination and balance, vision problems, and issues with cognition and concentration.

Multiple Sclerosis is considered a chronic condition with varying patterns of disease progression. Some people may experience periodic relapses and remissions, while others may have a more gradual progression of symptoms.

My Approach

As a Nutritionist and Nutritional Therapist, when working with patients in my clinic in Harley Street, London, and online, I take a holistic approach. Rather than suppressing the symptoms, I work on finding the root cause of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and restoring the balance using diet, supplements and lifestyle.

The gastrointestinal system, especially the gut, houses a significant portion of the immune system. Approximately 70% of the body’s immune cells are found in the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). This high concentration of immune cells in the gut is essential for monitoring and responding to potential threats from ingested microorganisms and antigens.

The interaction between the gut and the immune system is complex, involving a balance between protecting the body from harmful pathogens and tolerating beneficial substances.

Changes in this balance, such as disruptions in the gut microbiota or increased permeability of the intestinal lining, have been suggested to play a role in the development or exacerbation of autoimmune diseases.

My 5R Approach

REMOVE

Remove allergic/intolerant foods, parasites, bad bacteria, yeast. This may include an ‘elimination diet’ to find out what foods are causing the symptoms.

REPLACE

Replace digestive secretions, such as hydrochloric acid, digestive enzymes or bile salts, that are required for proper digestion and that may be compromised by diet, drugs, diseases, ageing, and other factors.

REINOCULATE

Populate your gut with probiotics and prebiotics.

REPAIR

Help the lining of the gut repair itself by supplying the key nutrients.

REBALANCE

Address the lifestyle factors that may affect your gut function.

WORKING WITH A NUTRITIONIST

Working with a Nutritionist can be transformative if you suffer from Multiple Sclerosis (MS). If you are struggling with your health despite your best efforts, it may be time to seek professional help. You can get help from your Nutritionist in developing a personalised nutrition plan, identifying nutrient deficiencies, and help you in addressing any other underlying medical issues that might be negatively impacting your health.

Your Nutritionist can work with you to develop a personalised nutrition plan that is catered to your unique needs and goals. The Nutritionist can also offer recommendations on the best supplements to take and lifestyle choices that can affect your weight, like getting enough sleep and managing your stress.

Book an appointment today if you feel like you need more assistance or direction to reach your goals.

Online consultation with a Nutritionist is available for clients who live outside the London area or who are unable to come to my London office. You can enjoy the online consultation from the comfort of your home or office and you will be given the same level of personal attention and care that you would experience coming to see the Nutritionist in person.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR?

SYMPTOMS OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS (MS):

The symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) can vary widely and may depend on the location and extent of nerve damage in the central nervous system. Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue
This is one of the most common and often debilitating symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.
  • Difficulty Walking
Problems with coordination, balance, and muscle weakness can make walking challenging.
  • Numbness or Tingling
Sensations of numbness, tingling, or pins and needles may occur, often in the extremities.
  • Muscle Weakness
Weakness in the muscles, particularly in the legs, can occur.
  • Spasticity
Stiffness or involuntary muscle spasms can affect movement.
  • Vision Problems
Multiple Sclerosis can cause optic neuritis, leading to blurred vision, eye pain, and sometimes loss of vision.
  • Dizziness and Vertigo
Problems with balance and coordination can lead to dizziness or a spinning sensation (vertigo).
  • Cognitive Impairment
Some patients may experience difficulties with memory, attention, and problem-solving.
  • Emotional Changes
Mood swings, depression, and anxiety are common in people with MS.
  • Bladder and Bowel Dysfunction
Multiple Sclerosis can affect the control of the bladder and bowel, leading to issues such as incontinence or constipation.
  • Speech and Swallowing Difficulties
Multiple Sclerosis can impact the muscles used for speech and swallowing.

It’s important to note that not everyone with Multiple Sclerosis will experience all of these symptoms, and the severity and combination of symptoms can vary from person to person. Additionally, symptoms may come and go or progress over time.
